Do you keep your toothbrush in the bathroom? You won't do it again after reading this

by Wildsmile

It is estimated that 7 out of 10 people keep their toothbrush in the bathroom, but recent studies have shown that it is a very unhygienic practice.

From toilet to toothbrush

According to research by Dr. Maria Geisinger, professor of periodontology at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, 60% of toothbrushes left in the bathroom contain faecal matter and bacteria dangerous to human health such as Serratia, Escherichia coli, Giardia, Salmonellosis, just to name a few. Bacteria are spread in the environment by toilet flushes, which can cause various gastrointestinal diseases. What is advised is to flush the water with the toilet lid closed, so that bacteria cannot spread so easily into the environment and onto bathroom surfaces or onto your toothbrush. But it's not just by closing the toilet lid that we are totally safe, as other studies have found such bacteria on sink handles, tiles, doors and toothbrushes.

How to keep my toothbrush bacteria free?

By washing and rinsing it every time before and after use, this habit is extremely important to keep your toothbrush clean. It is also advisable to keep it in a dry environment and not to store it in special toothbrush cases or bristle protectors, if the toothbrush is wet, remember that moisture is a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria.

Where should you store your toothbrush?

As we said at the beginning of this article, 7 out of 10 people leave their toothbrush in the bathroom, so we recommend storing it in a cool place outside the bathroom, previously washed and dried. The American Dental Association recommends that toothbrushes should not be stored in closed containers, as damp environments increase the growth of microorganisms. It is best to store them vertically in a clean place and let them dry naturally.

By following all these tips, we can keep our toothbrush clean and protect the health of our family.
